Soil contamination with poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has become a challenging issue due to the negative effects of these substances on the environment and public health.

An extremely stable molecular structure and the physical and chemical characteristics of PFAS make them persistent in the environment and difficult to eliminate from the soil mass. The optimal remediation strategy for a given contaminated site is determined by a number of site characteristics, such as site location and nearby land use, time and budget constraints, soil characteristics (organic matter, mineralogy, clay content, pH, salinity, nature of the cation index), the characteristics of the PFAS (level of contamination, type of PFAS to be eliminated) and the expected degree of repair.
